Sights and Activities
How’s the weather? If you’re here during our beautiful fall or spring seasons, try renting a bike from an Austin Metrobike station. Starting from Zilker Park, you can check out the Zilker Botanical Garden, Barton Springs, Umlauf Sculptural Gardens, Butler Trail and the Congress Bridge bat colony — all within 15 minutes’ ride of one another, and all on dedicated bike paths.
When air conditioning is a priority, enjoy some of the world-class museums, like Blanton Museum of Art or Bullock Texas State History Museum.
Later, catch some blues on South Congress, go two-stepping at historic Broken Spoke (they give lessons!) or stroll East 6th Street until one of the countless vibrant establishments catches your interest.
The Ann and Roy Butler Trail is a 10-mile path encircling Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin. Dozens more miles of trails connect it to wonderful spots like Barton Springs or Pease Park - all without touching a road.
Austin is the Live Music Capital of the World! You can find live music options on any given night, including at mainstay venues like Antone’s, Continental Club and The Hole in the Wall. Check out Do512 and Showlist Austin for a few of the shows happening during your stay.
Founded 60 years ago and still operated by the original owner, Broken Spoke is one of the most revered dance halls in all of Texas. New to country dancing? Fear not: they offer free two-stepping lessons from 8-9 pm, Wednesday through Saturday.
Austin is known for its many natural water features, including the spring-fed pools of Deep Eddy and the renowned Barton Springs. Note these may cost a few bucks to enter.
Feeling adventurous? Hike along Barton Creek to the untampered swimming holes of Twin Falls and Sculpture Falls.
From March to October, North America’s largest urban bat colony returns to Austin, emerging around sunset every day. At their peak in late summer, you can witness over 1.5 million bats taking flight!
Located a few miles north of downtown on the University of Texas campus, the Blanton Museum is an artwork unto itself. You can find regularly rotating exhibits from notable artists.
Think Texas is all tumbleweeds? Think again! Zilker Botanical Garden showcases the best of the diverse flora that thrive in Austin.
The ornate, 140 year-old capitol building regularly offers free tours, outlining the fascinating history of the state of Texas. When you’re finished, the large Capitol Grounds has much more to offer, including 22 monuments.
Food and drink
Texas is the best at barbecue of course, and we will not be hearing other opinions at this time. There’s also Tex-Mex — far from a chain restaurant gimmick, that genre is a rich blend of historical culinary traditions. Feeling something else? Austin’s food scene has exploded in recent years, so there will be good options for whatever you’re in the mood for.
For drinks, take your pick of grungy dive to elevated rooftop bar — the city has countless great spots to pick from.
Not a specific place — a culture. The most authentic tacos are from these trucks, found in just about every corner of the city.
We recommend the original location on East 6th. This family of restaurants has some novel ramen concepts as well, including Tiki Tatsu-Ya (Hawai’ian) and Kemuri Tatsu-Ya (BBQ).
With sleek atmosphere, a creative a la carte menu and sharable portions of fries, these are the best craft burgers in Texas.
With its flagship location on historic South Congress, this spot offers the best pizza in Austin. Don’t want to wait? Grab some classics by-the-slice from the second location right next door.
Grab a Lone Star and enjoy some honky tonk in this intimate watering hole. Be sure to join in on the famed “Chicken Sh*t Bingo” on Sunday night.
For an elevated experience, Roosevelt Room offers inspired craft cocktails in ritzy digs. Tables fill fast - consider making a reservation.
