Areca Air Purifier
CLEAN LOOK, CLEANER AIR.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, IPD Products looked to revolutionize the way we clean our air. The were equipped with PlasmaFence™ technology, an approach to killing pathogens developed and tested with military backing. Unlike traditional air purifiers, which rely on filters that simply trap pathogens, this technology attacks them in six different ways simultaneously, ensuring that they are totally destroyed.
Fahrenheit was enlisted to help develop a commercially viable product, including the creation of a brand. Jointly developed with IDM Tech.

Exploring and optimizing
With a rough idea of what components were needed, we explored how they could be laid out, and how this would affect the volume of different forms.
The technology was still being refined, so this process was iterative, requiring several rounds of exploration as new information about the functional requirements came to light.
An augmented approach
Because of this product’s unique size requirements, we needed a way to understand its scale in the real world. A concept may look good on paper, but how do we know what it will “feel” like? Will it be too big? Too small?
To evaluate the leading concepts, we visualized them using augmented reality (AR). This allows us to quickly see how a design looks in a real environment, without having to build full-scale physical mockups.
A symbol of protection
Along with the industrial design, we were tasked with developing a brand around the product.
We conducted exercises to understand how the client viewed themselves, and how they wanted their technology to be perceived by their audience.
This gave us a framework around which to design the product itself, as well as a basis for creating the branding.
Modern / Reliable / Distinct / Professional-Grade
Intended for use in commercial spaces, like restaurants and doctors’ offices, Areca is designed to visually blend in with a variety of environments, while invoking confidence that the user is being kept safe.
Openings were made to maximize airflow without exposing the interior, and are positioned so that accidental obstruction is unlikely. The top and interior were designed to limit the chance of sensitive components being damaged by anything dropped or spilled on top.
The device’s wide profile allows it to house all necessary components without protruding too far from the wall. The rounded sides evoke the image of a column, a symbol of strength and security.
